TikTok Tackles Disinformation: EU Urges Maximum Effort!
On Monday, the chief technology regulator of the EU urged TikTok’s CEO to make every possible effort to combat disinformation, while acknowledging the alterations already implemented by the video-sharing platform.
The Chinese app, popular with younger online users, is one of 19 platforms with stricter rules to combat illegal and harmful online content under a landmark EU law.
“We have seen changes to the TikTok platform in recent months: new features have been released to protect users and invest in content moderation, trust and security,” EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said after the video. call with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.
TikTok said it pulled four million “offensive” videos in the European Union in September in its first transparency report since the Digital Services Act (DSA) came into effect across the bloc.
According to the DSA, all major platforms must publish a transparency report every six months.
Breton said the European Commission was investigating whether TikTok had done enough to comply with the DSA after it launched an investigation last month.
“Now more than ever, we must spare our efforts to protect our citizens – especially children and young people – from illegal content and disinformation,” he added.
Theo Bertram, TikTok’s vice president of European public policy, said Breton and Chew had a “positive discussion about TikTok’s progress” at the DSA.
“We are encouraged that our efforts have not gone unnoticed. We will continue to work closely with the Commission on compliance with the DSA,” Bertram said on social media.
“It’s gratifying that TikTok’s efforts to comply with the DSA and keep our community safe are being recognized,” said Caroline Greer, TikTok’s director of public policy.
Chew will meet EU commissioners Vera Jourova and Didier Reynders in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss issues such as data protection and Brussels’ tough new restrictions on big tech’s market power.
